The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer behind many legendary styles favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has passed away at the age of 80.

Price was best known for his architectural shapes and theatrical styles, including the soft-colored suits that appeared in the iconic band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "the song Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement across their platforms."

Price's death comes shortly after he unveiled his newest line in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen modelled a dress inspired by the iconic black velvet "dress" once worn by Princess Diana.

An Enduring Influence

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London in the early 1960s to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he began designing clothing for men at the company Stirling Copper and was behind the form-fitting, button-fly pants that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show featured as its opener looks from the famed model Jerry Hall, who later wore the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A key creative partner of the late David Bowie, Price created the memorable jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to blend tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in crafting body-hugging looks cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," as stated by the British Fashion Council.

During the nineties, he started creating pieces for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, which included several ensembles for her American tour after assuming the title.

After a career spanning over fifty years, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in collaboration with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: A hallmark of his work.
  • Performative Style: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Merging menswear with womenswear.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.

The fashion world mourns the loss to a true visionary whose influence on fashion and music remains deeply ingrained.
