California's Governor Confirms He Is Considering a Presidential Campaign for 2028
The California governor, a leading Democratic figure, has indicated that he will make a decision about whether to run for president in 2028 after the 2026 midterm elections conclude.
"Yes, it would be dishonest otherwise," Newsom stated when asked about giving serious thought to a White House bid post the 2026 elections. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I won't do that."
The governor's time in office as California's leader ends in early 2027, and he is ineligible for re-election. Yet, he cautioned that any decision is a long way off.
"The future will decide," he said.
Increased Visibility as a Political Adversary
Newsom has emerged as a prominent critic of the former president's team, using his online platforms and championing a proposition that would boost Democratic representation in Congress in response to Republican redistricting efforts. This action has drawn criticism from critics.
Federal Funding Dispute
The former president's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, claimed that Newsom shows no concern about Californians in a recent interview on a major news network. Duffy revealed a strategy to pull taxpayer dollars from California and suggested suspending the state's ability to grant commercial driver's licenses.
"I intend to cut $160 million from California," he declared, after a recently reported deadly accident in California involving an unauthorized semi truck driver that caused fatalities and casualties.
Newsom's office highlighted that the federal government had approved the worker's status on several occasions, which permitted him to secure a trucking license under U.S. law.
Duffy had previously indicated he was blocking additional funds from the state for not enforcing English language requirements for CDL holders.
Pointed Reply from the Governor's Office
"One-time television figure, now transportation chief, fails to grasp national statutes," his administration said in a last month's release countering Duffy's threats. "In the meantime, in contrast to this person, we'll stick to the facts: California CDL holders had a death rate nearly 40% lower than the national average. Texas – the single state with more commercial holders – has a rate substantially higher than the state. Facts don't lie. The Trump administration does."
Polling Data and Campaign Considerations
A recent poll found that 72% of Democrats and almost half of voters believed that Newsom must consider running for the White House in the next election cycle. Since Trump took office, Newsom's favorability has risen to an typical level of a third from around 30%, while his negative ratings has dropped from an typical level of over 40% to 38.4%.
In previous months, Newsom commented while on a trip several swing states that he had "no clue" about his intentions for the next presidential election.
He noted his past difficulties, including being found to have a learning disability at the early childhood.
"The idea that a individual who got 960 on his SAT, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was typically not at the front – the idea that you would even throw that out is, in and of itself, remarkable," he commented. "No one can say? I am eager to see who presents themselves in the next election and who answers the call. And that's the question for the voters."
