British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French warplanes in a coordinated attack on an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The site, located using reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just above the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a several entry passages providing entry to the site... preliminary assessments suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - enforced militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any re-emergence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

British military aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces involved in this strike for their professionalism and their bravery," he commented. "They were part of a great many British personnel deployed over the holidays. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our safety, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."

During December, the US military conducted what it called a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations says Islamic State still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
