Democrats Criticize Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Execution
Lawmakers from the Democratic party demonstrated anger after the ex-president accused a coalition of Democratic congress members of being "betrayers" and asserted they should be taken into custody and sentenced "through capital punishment" following their release of a disputed video.
The Recording That Provoked the Dispute
The recorded message, released on Tuesday, features six Democratic lawmakers who formerly acted in military or security positions.
"As we did, you all made an oath to defend and uphold this national charter," the officials declared in the 90-second video. "Currently, the threats to our constitution aren't just from abroad, but from right here at home. Our statutes are explicit, you can reject illegal orders, you can refuse improper directives, you must refuse improper directives. No one has to execute orders that break the legal system or our constitution."
Trump's Furious Reaction
The recorded statement reportedly trigger a heated reply from the ex-president.
On Thursday morning, Trump wrote on Truth Social: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In a separate message, he wrote: "This represents really concerning, and Risky to our Country. Their comments cannot be allowed to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent publication, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also shared a comment that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Opposition Leaders React
Following Trump's remarks on Thursday, Democratic leadership released a unified announcement condemning the remarks.
"Partisan aggression has no role in this nation," they stated. "Representatives who appeared in the video all worked our United States with exceptional national pride and distinction. We strongly denounce Donald Trump's appalling and dangerous threats of violence against elected officials, and call on Republican lawmakers to vigorously do the same."
The opposition officials also stated that they had been in touch with security officials "to make certain the security of these representatives and their families."
"Donald Trump must without delay remove these unhinged social media posts and recant his dangerous discourse before he leads to violence," the statement added.
Officials' Strong Response
The representatives who participated in the video also issued a declaration.
"We identify as former service members and national security professionals who love this United States and swore an pledge to safeguard and uphold the constitution of the United States," they stated. "Our pledge lasts a lifetime, and we aim to honor it. No intimidation, pressure, or call for violence will deter us from that important obligation."
"What's most telling is that the ex-president views it punishable by execution for us to reiterate the statutes," they continued. "Our service members should understand that we have their backs as they fulfill their pledge to the founding principles and responsibility to obey only lawful orders. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our obligation."
They continued: "All citizens must join forces and condemn the ex-president's requests for our death and partisan aggression. This is a moment for ethical certainty."
Additional Political Responses
The Democratic Senate minority leader also condemned Trump's remarks and shared on social media: "It's important to understand: the President of the United States is calling for the death of public representatives."
He continued: "This constitutes an direct THREAT. All senators, every Representative, all citizens – regardless of party – should censure this right away and absolutely."
The GOP leader defended Trump's assertion that the Democrats had engaged in "sedition", labeling the video as "wildly inappropriate", stating: "This represents very risky, you have leading members of Congress advising soldiers to defy commands, I think that represents historic in American history."
The GOP official also according to sources stated to the press that in what he read of Trump's posts, Trump was "explaining the crime of treason" but that "legal experts have to examine the language and establish all that."
Executive Branch Statement
During a administration briefing on later that day, when asked by a reporter, "Is the president want to put to death members of Congress?", the administration spokesperson answered: "No."
"We should understand about what the ex-commander in chief is addressing," the spokesperson declared. "We see current representatives of the US Congress who worked together to orchestrate a digital communication to personnel of the national defense, to serving soldiers advising them to ignore the executive's lawful orders."
She added: "The integrity of our military depends on the command structure, and if that structure is broken, it can result in people getting killed, it can cause confusion, and that is exactly what these congressional representatives ... are essentially supporting."
