Eurovision Used to Be a Whimsical Delight – Yet It Has Evolved Into a Cynical Way to Whitewash War.
An freshly coined initialism surfaced a few months following the onset of the military campaign against Gaza. Known as WCNSF, it signifies “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This designation is specific to Gaza, according to health professionals like child health specialists. Typically, it is unusual for medical staff to attend to a young patient who has been bereaved of their entire family. But, there has been nothing “normal” concerning the devastating conflict in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been eradicated and the number of young amputees surpasses that of any other place in the world. No sense of normalcy about scores of doctors coming back from a sea of ruins with accounts of children being intentionally shot at.
A Living Nightmare Despite a Supposed Ceasefire
Conditions in Gaza persist as hell on earth. Vital medicines and equipment are failing to reach those in need, and groups like Amnesty International assert that atrocities are ongoing. Authorities has denied these claims, consistent with how it denies each claim it is charged with. But while traumatised orphans are now enduring frigid conditions in temporary shelters, there is a little heartwarming news: nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from continuing with its professed goal of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” Eurovision will continue to extend a prestigious stage for Israel, despite the fact that at least four European countries have now pulled out in protest. And this, it seems, is what international harmony manifests as.
Historically, Eurovision banned Russia from participating in 2022 over the “grave situation in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza seems completely different.
Contradictory Principles
Disregard the reality that Israel was criticized for irregular participation methods last year in what seems to have been an attempt to inject politics into Eurovision. Forget the fact that a toddler was reportedly killed in Gaza just days ago. Forget the fact that settler violence and forced displacement in the West Bank have surged. Overlook the situation that international journalists are still blocked from unfettered access in Gaza. All of this, it would seem, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.
The Contest Continues Against a Backdrop of Unimaginable Suffering
Eurovision marks seven decades next year – almost double the average life expectancy of someone in Gaza at present. The event will proceed, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the whimsical pleasure it once represented. A contest that was originally built on harmony has devolved into a cynical way to whitewash war.
