India's capital Rises to Dangerous Haze Post Festival of Lights
Tuesday brought residents of the world's most polluted city encountered inhaling dangerously toxic air that was classified as the "alarming" range.
Extremely High Air Quality Readings
Several parts of the capital registered an air quality index above 500, which translates to 10x the safe limit set by the global health authority.
Particular areas, levels of dangerous airborne particles reached peaks of 1,800, representing fifteen to twenty times above acceptable levels.
Fireworks Ban and Current Changes
Beginning in 2020, the government had implemented a total prohibition on the distribution and bursting of firecrackers during the Festival of Lights due to their substantial impact to the deadly haze that blankets the city as the cold season sets in.
Yet recently, the current city leadership petitioned the supreme court to seek a relaxation of the prohibition.
They proposed allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – which have been doubted by environmental experts as being only roughly 30 percent reduced emissions – as a balance between "heritage and public health".
Legal Ruling and Enforcement
Much to the frustration of public health and environmental campaigners, judges complied with the request, specifying that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be used during limited time windows throughout the Diwali.
Throughout the festival evening, there was widespread flouting of the regulated periods across the capital, with minimal regulation regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the supposedly greener type.
Several recording stations throughout Delhi showed air quality spiking around midnight to some of the worst measurements seen during celebrations in at least the past three years.
International Implications
The proliferation of pyrotechnics during the celebrations also initiated a dispute with adjacent the neighboring country, with representatives in Pakistani the Punjab region partially attributing worsening atmospheric conditions in Lahore on hazardous particles originating in neighboring India following the events.
Long-Standing Pollution Issue
Extremely elevated concentrations of air contamination in the city have persisted as a serious challenge for fifteen-plus years, with the situation showing no improvement.
Around the festival period, the amount of toxic airborne contaminants in the atmosphere has been documented to shoot up to 70% higher the worst readings ever documented in the Chinese city, which was formerly regarded as the world's most polluted city.
Diverse Contamination Factors
This crisis in the capital is caused by a convergence of multiple factors including transportation pollution, dust, development work, waste incineration and smoke from farm burning in adjacent states of Punjab and Haryana.
Throughout these areas, agricultural workers regularly set their fields on fire to expedite field preparation, generating dangerous smog that then gets trapped over the metropolitan area as colder air sets in.
Medical and Financial Consequences
The economic and health impact on the approximately 33 million people residing in the metropolitan zone is enormous, according to multiple studies.
These hazardous conditions leads to increased incidence of nervous system, heart and circulatory and respiratory disorders, and can potentially cause malignancies.
The pollution is calculated to be accounting for 10,000 untimely deaths per year in the city.
