Information Available Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Shooting
No fewer than 16 lives lost their lives and more than 40 sustained injuries when assailants fired on a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian police have called a terrorist attack.
As of the newest reports, officials have stated the death toll is 16, which includes one of the alleged attackers. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were taken to hospital.
The victims are yet to be formally identified, but police believe their ages range between 10 and 87 years old.
Listed are the individuals who have been named so far.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Known as a father of five children, he worked as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member said.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.
She told the moments leading up to the attack, saying they were standing when the shooting erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.
The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
In a statement, a senior official said that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the statement read.
One Child
A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.
One Israeli Citizen
An Israeli citizen was among those killed during the attack, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, many are still receiving treatment, with a number in critical condition. Those hurt include two officers who responded to the attack.
A wounded man is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Called a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.
In a message, he described the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He said he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.
“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
