Israelis mark two-year anniversary of October 7th incident as Gaza peace talks proceed
Citizens have gathered throughout the country to commemorate the second anniversary since the Hamas-initiated attack on 7 October 2023, as negotiations proceeded in the neighboring country over an end to the conflict in Gaza.
The incident led to over 1,200 people killed and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as captives. It was the uniquely deadliest day for the Jewish community since the World War II.
Israel answered by launching a armed campaign in Gaza which has taken in excess of 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its figures are regarded as accurate by the UN and other world agencies.
"The bloodthirsty opponents have hit us hard, but they have not overcome us," the leader stated on Tuesday.
He also vowed to "realize all the goals of the war: the return of all the kidnapped, the removal of the Hamas government and the promise that Gaza will no longer pose a threat to Israel".
Remembrance Events Across Israel
The national leadership delayed state commemorations until 16 October - after the completion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but gatherings still took place throughout the country on Tuesday.
A memorial ceremony for the relatives of Israelis killed in the Hamas incident was conducted in the coastal city. Arranged by the affected families, it was televised on Israeli television channels.
A period earlier, a minute's silence was observed around the country.
Negotiation Meetings in Egypt
Meanwhile, Israeli and Hamas representatives met in the Egyptian tourist destination of the negotiation venue for a second day of indirect talks to examine the conditions of the plan.
A prominent Palestinian official knowledgeable about the talks said that an late session of negotiations commenced at 19:00 Cairo time.
The official stated the earlier meeting finished without concrete outcomes, amid conflicting views over the proposed Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to make certain Israel does not resume hostilities after the first phase of the arrangement.
He noted that the talks are "difficult and have still not achieve any real breakthrough," but pointed out that facilitators are making efforts to reduce the disparities between the conflicting groups.
Key Matters in Discussions
- An enduring ceasefire
- The exchange of the captives still held by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The removal of troops from Gaza
- Arrangements for humanitarian aid provision
- After-conflict management of the area
Civilian Reaction
In the city's memorial area that day, young Hagar - whose sibling endured the attack on the Nova music festival, where 378 people were killed and dozens more were taken hostage by Hamas fighters - explained: "No location seems like home anymore and until every captive come back not a single person will be secure."
"After we see everyone home once more, we can breathe again. Then we can begin to heal," she concluded.
In front of the prime minister's residence in Jerusalem, people assembled to show their support for the loved ones of the captives. Israel states forty-eight continue in confinement in Gaza, twenty of whom are believed to be surviving.
Demonstrator a participant explained: "It's necessary do any agreement needed for the abducted to be released. But we sincerely need assurances that we will be protected."
Surveys now frequently demonstrate that about the majority of Israeli citizens desire the hostilities to conclude in exchange for the release of the hostages.
Gaza Circumstances
At the site of the music event, those paying respects came together to pay their respects.
From there, the sound of aerial bombardments and explosions could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the heavy Israeli shelling carried on.
In the main city, air and artillery strikes were reported in the early hours of that day in the western district, Rimal and Nasr districts and in the east side district of the community, as well the settlement to the northwest.
"When the dusk arrives, the anxiety comes with it," evacuated Gaza City resident a mother, whose teenage son was died by an Israeli air strike previously, shared.
"We are fearful of the attacks. Throughout the evening we are sleeping together, holding each other, notably my youngest child who rests his face on me all night."
"Continuously we look at the news to see developments. And I'm afraid that this truce will not be achieved and that the conflict will return to us."
