Larian Studios Clarifies Its Use of Machine Learning for Next Project

The developer behind popular RPGs like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin has recently shown its next major project, sparking significant hype within the gaming community. However, recent statements from the company's figurehead have introduced nuance to the narrative, addressing the team's approach toward generative artificial intelligence.

Augmenting Workflows, Not Cutting Jobs

In a new statement, Swen Vincke detailed that the company is employing AI technology for certain preliminary purposes. These include fleshing out PowerPoint slides, producing initial artistic references, and writing placeholder text.

Notably, Vincke made clear that the end material in the game will be crafted entirely by actual artists. "We are developing all the content in-house," he said.

We are actively expanding our pool of writers and are busily forming dedicated writer rooms.

Given that this area is being specifically referenced — we right now have twenty-three concept artists and have positions available for further talent.

All our efforts we do is additive and designed to letting our team spend more time on making content.

Every ML tool implemented properly is additive to a artist's process, not a substitute for their talent.

Addressing Concerns and Clarifying the Vision

The admission of employing this technology initially generated backlash among portions of the player base. In response, Vincke offered more clarification on social media.

"Our team utilizes machine learning to research ideas, in the same way we use the internet and reference books," he explained. "During the initial planning process we use it as a basic framework for composition which we then replace with authentic artwork."

He continued, "We've hired talent for their inherent skill, not for their capacity to execute what a algorithm proposes."

Key Areas of AI Integration

Vincke had in the past broken down the studio's practical approach to machine learning, categorizing its use into primary pillars:

  • Automation of Tedious Tasks: This encompasses polishing mocap data, dialogue cleanup, and pipeline-specific tasks like adapting animations for different models.
  • Rapid Prototyping ('White Boxing'): Using technology to rapidly prototype rough versions of gameplay ideas to test concepts before expensive implementation.
  • Future Potential for Gameplay: Exploring how AI could eventually create new forms of player agency, especially in creating player-driven narratives in a complex RPG.

He explicitly noted that central narrative domains — like writing — are not departments where the studio is cutting human talent. Conversely, Larian is recruiting more in these precise positions.

"Our studio is not releasing a game with AI-generated content, and we are certainly not considering trimming down staff to swap them out with AI," Vincke summarized.
