Much like Storm Claudia tore through the northwest the previous evening, Manchester City blew Manchester United aside at the Etihad. It was a convincing three-nil win for their manager's side thanks to goals from Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Hemp. It was a display that clearly signaled their championship potential as they consolidated their place at the WSL pinnacle.

Successive Setbacks for United

This scoreline represented successive league defeats for Marc Skinner’s side for the first time since spring 2024, putting them a significant margin off the table toppers with their championship aspirations in serious doubt.

Manchester United's capability to balance league and continental soccer with a limited team has been a widely debated topic since they qualified for the UCL. Looking at the calendar, it always seemed this was the matchday that would fully examine this fortitude. Unfortunately for the visitors, they appeared fatigued from start to finish, the landmark win against Paris Saint-Germain clearly having had an impact.

Lineup Adjustments

Marc Skinner had attempted to freshen things up with a a few changes. Toone, Terland, Janssen and Galton all added freshness, although the dropping of the in-form Malard to the substitutes raised a few eyebrows.

The hosts, in opposition, have no similar fitness issues. Jeglertz made one adjustment from their most recent win over the Toffees with Lauren Hemp making her initial starting appearance since healing from a physical setback.

Commanding Opening Period

The storm clouds started to build for the United boss and his team from the opening minute. This was a show of the quality from Manchester City whose energetic offense controlled and tore United open with a sublime opening period showing that saw them net a trio in under half an hour.

This placed City firmly in control and saw the visitors all at sea. In advance of this fixture, the away side had allowed just six in this domestic competition but they collapsed in the wake of Manchester City's attacking flair.

Initial Opportunities

The early indicators came soon when Miedema used her power to bundle Zigiotti off the ball, only to pull her shot off target. Hemp was at the core of everything from the start, taking advantage of the room left by Jayde Riviere down United’s wing. Her passes were causing problems and led to an opportunity for Hasegawa that Sandberg kicked off the line.

The Red Devils had a number of forays forward, their long-ball tactic giving them alternatives in the flanks but they could not trouble Yamashita. Manchester City, in the meantime, commanded the ball, probing their rivals and trying to draw them out of their organization.

Triple Strike

They converted their dominance with almost half an hour played when Fujino won the home team a set-piece. A delivery to the far post was nodded across goal by Bunny Shaw for Rebecca Knaak to head in. It was City’s 7th header of the campaign.

They extended their lead with two more goals just before the half-time. When Rose was allowed to drive through the midfield from central defence, the pitch became spacious for the hosts. The prominent Kerstin Casparij received possession on the right before delivering a pinpoint driven ball for Bunny Shaw to bundle home. A short time later, they had a third after a swift change in the ball saw Hemp allowed the opportunity to drive a shot home from outside the box.

After the Break

The primary substitution came from the United manager at the interval as Melvine Malard came on for Terland but by this time it was futile to alter the outcome of the contest. Ex- City player Park came closest, rattling the post, but the visitors were creatively abject and were unable to produce a one shot on target.

The hosts, on the other hand, could have increased their cushion when a delightful Vivianne Miedema through ball sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to fluff her lines but it mattered little to the winning team. Having failed to beat any team who placed above them last season, the manager's side now have successes against the Gunners and Manchester United to position them in a strong standing after nine games.
