That Gory Animated Movie Conclusion That Lingers Viewers
Out of all the mature animated films I’ve ever viewed, nothing has stuck with me quite like the terror-laced conclusion of the viscerally violent and highly provocative film from 2022 The Unicorn Wars.
Back in 2015’s, this Spanish filmmaker created a dark, somber , frequently brutal universe that included several minor , desolate twinges of hope.
While Unicorn Wars seems like it came from a drive to expand animation even more, the filmmaker stated that it was actually a try to convey a universal, cross-cultural message concerning “the mutual source of each battle.”
This theme is expressed through a group of colorful pastel bears , openly modeled after a popular line of cuddly characters.
Maturing in a culture centered on militarism as well as the defense industry, a lot of these animals are obsessed with slaughtering the mythical beasts, thanks to a holy book which states the bears they were once kings of the woods, until the unicorns expelled them.
A few have not completely accepted the brainwashing, and prefer to try out narcotics or mate outdoors.
Unlike their friendly counterparts, these colorful critters show sexual organs and obvious libidos.
For one particularly cruel, skeptical animal, the bear named Bluey, the battle with unicorns transforms into a path to control — and especially to dominance above his softer, nicer brother the character Tubby.
This bear acts as a tormentor and an obvious sociopath , and while terror overcomes his unit and takes his teammates individually, he seizes more and more power for himself, through ever more bloody, harmful methods.
Simultaneously, these mythical beings are suffering their own nightmare, as an expanding, deadly beast in their woods.
“At the beginning, it appears as a comedy,” the director said. “But then it evolves into a more dramatic and sorrowful movie. And by the end, it’s a terrifying movie.”
Unicorn Wars starts out similar to one of the most playful features from a legendary filmmaker, that discover a naughty glee in letting animated figures swear, fire weapons, or have intimate relations.
Afterward it evolves into more akin to a darker work from that creator, featuring progressively explicit brutality , a tangible relation to the real horror of conflict.
Ultimately, it’s a full-on extreme drama massacre.
The horror that turns this a Halloween-friendly watch begins well before than one might expect.
Unicorn Wars is suited for the hardcore fans of gore, for enthusiasts of intense movies who want to view something they’ve never viewed until now, and are able to withstand a narrative that offers absolutely no punches.
See it in a dark room with no disturbances, and the conclusion will crawl into your mind and linger.
