The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Here's a test for partners in committed relationships who appreciate scary movies: Sit down with your loved one and view Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. At first glance, it could look like conventional physical horror, but within Together resides a intense examination about how we choose to love one another.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, the actors bring a unique chemistry to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The plot commences when Millie and Tim move from the urban environment to the rural area for Millie’s job. A commonly used story element, of course, but that’s largely where the conventions conclude. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the two fall into an underground cave. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence takes hold of the duo. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a slow burn horror experience, blending moments of fever-dream horrors, gross (but never too gross) body horror, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes amidst something horrific). Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and distant from his network of friends. He dreads the notion of totally forfeiting his individual identity in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie never makes Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

The couple grapple with the type of challenges that are inherent in most partnerships after ten years. At their core, they have affection for each other. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these anxieties of excessive reliance and fully committing to a partner, the allegory avoids being clumsy or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending plant anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your partner and state, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can embark on right now.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform at present.
