The star has donated the full amount of his £25,000 Mercury Prize winnings to the Music Venues Trust, which works to save the Britain's independent music venues.

Fender was presented with the award on October 16 as his third album the album was chosen as the top album of the last 12 months.

He has opted to donate the funds to the MVT, in acknowledgment of the vital role grassroots venues fulfilled in his beginning days.

"As an artist wouldn't be doing this success if it wasn't for all the shows I performed around the North East, and further afield, when I was beginning," stated Sam Fender. "These venues are iconic, but they are struggling."

Beginning in 2023, over 150 of these venues have shut down – roughly 16 percent of the whole industry in the UK.

Recently, well-known musicians like Pulp, the group Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all supported the trust in its initiatives to help venues survive, by adding a small levy to their ticket costs, which benefits local stages.

Sam Fender also joined in, generating over £100k on his recent tour to help numerous grassroots venues across Britain.

These funds assisted spaces that were facing imminent closure due to challenges arising from floods, fires and family tragedies, as well as permit problems, court cases and noise complaints.

Other venues were granted financial assistance in improving facilities and gear that positively impacted artists and fans.

"The notion that money from concerts in large arenas supports the smaller venues, where it kicks off for musicians like me, is just sensible," Fender has stated.

Fender is not the first artist to donate his honor prize money to charitable organizations.

Back when they won the prize in 1996 for their release the album, vocalist Cocker stated that the band would donate their winnings to the charity War Child.

In 2002, artist Ms Dynamite split her bounty among a few charities, like the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell organization.

"And I contributed a thousand pounds to Highgate Newtown, to their gymnastics program, because I did gymnastics when I was growing up and they lacked new equipment," Ms Dynamite shared with a publication.

Two years ago, they gave their winnings to the community center that nurtured their group, alongside other local music groups.

And winners that year the group donated their award to a multiple sclerosis charity after a acquaintance was identified with the condition.

"The victory was ample," remarked artist the singer. "The prize was the extra but we could do without the cherry, because we had the honor. So our success impacted the lives of others."

Recently, the MVT shared it had protected two grassroots venues in south-east England, by placing them under local control.

The first in Southampton and the second in Bristol were bought under the public acquisition program, which is backed by Arts Council England and enthusiasts who acquire "shares" in the venues.
