The Reason Real Madrid Possess 'Complete Trust' in Youngster Pitarch
When an 18-year-old makes Real Madrid history in a pivotal European tie against City, it naturally attracts acclaim and the spotlight.
During his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the team - the young midfielder made a strong impression as the 15-time European champions claimed a three-nil round of 16 first leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The young player, who also made his Real debut in the play-off round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted the Madrid side overcome the English Premier League side in Tuesday's return to secure a last eight berth.
Aged 18 years and 226 days, the midfielder became the team's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating star Vinicius Jr's previous mark by 10 days.
A Meteoric Rise Through The Academy
This talent is the most recent to emerge from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of the manager's most exciting protegees.
He joined Real from Leganes in 2023, having previously been with Atletico and Getafe's academies, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a strong impression.
Pitarch progressed to the B team and it was in a pre-season game in which they faced the senior squad, then coached by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who replaced Xabi Alonso in the new year.
Reports would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," noting he excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, personality and determination he added to the team.
'His Greatest Quality Is His Character'
During the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Alonso invited Pitarch to train with the first team and awarded him playing time in the warm-up matches.
Yet, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the turning point in his career as he was introduced as a late substitute in both ties against Benfica that set up the clash with Manchester City.
"I've dreamed of this every night before going to bed, the very first time I started playing the game, each day you head to training and each day you play a match," stated Pitarch after his debut.
"I've just fulfilled my dream with the best team in the world and in the best competition."
Handed a starting debut in the Spanish league against his former club - where he was for four years after moving from Atleti in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the next four as injuries to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opening.
The teenager has seized it with performances that have defied his age and experience.
"He's a very quick footballer, and you can see what he's capable of," remarked the coach. "He's incredibly energetic, with great endurance, work-rate and movement."
The player's mindset has also stood out to his coach.
"His greatest quality is his personality," continued Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the possession, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.
"I realize fans might be astonished to see him start in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had complete confidence in him to do what he usually does.
"Thiago will keep receiving opportunities with the first team. It is delightful to have a talent like him."
A Future International Decision
Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and was raised fully immersed in the local game, progressing through youth setups before joining the club's famous La Fabrica system.
He holds dual Moroccan and Spanish nationality, offering him the choice to play for both nations at the highest level.
Under Fifa eligibility rules, players may represent different countries at youth level without being locked in, with the final decision only final once they play in a competitive senior international match.
He has played for Spain at youth level, turning out for both the under-19 and U20 sides, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja made it to the quarter-finals.
Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to either full national side, who are watching his rise with interest.
Speaking recently, the player said: "I have not taken my final decision yet. Things are positive with Spain, but I will reach a decision in the near future."
His situation echoes that of other dual nationality players such as club colleague Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. While 18-year-old Lamine chose La Roja, Diaz opted to represent Morocco.
Eyes on the Prize
At present, his attention is on establishing himself in the Real side and rewarding Arbeloa's faith.
He featured for over an hour in the 2-1 victory at the Etihad, which completed a five-one overall triumph and a last-eight tie with the German champions.
His substitution by another academy player in Manuel Angel to emphasise Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to help the team pursue future success.
After his impressive impact to date on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is tipped to play a key role in that.
"Arbeloa treats me the identical way. We handle it very normally. I attempt not to think about it too much - I have to deserve my minutes on the pitch," he said after the success at Manchester.
