NYC's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to make his home in the traditional Gracie Mansion, departing from his rent-controlled apartment that sparked debate in his run for office.

An Iconic Home

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the mayoral home for the majority of New York City mayors since the World War II era.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a central platform, did not confirm his residency plans promptly following his triumph in November.

"The choice was based on keeping my family safe and the need to dedicating my full attention on enacting the affordability agenda the city's residents voted for," the Mayor-Elect declared in his announcement.

Thanking a Neighborhood

His home was in the Astoria neighbourhood, an area known for its abundance of immigrant communities and culinary diversity.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: thank you for exemplifying the true spirit of New York City," he expressed.

"Even though I'm moving in Astoria, it will always live inside me and the work I do," he said.

Campaign Controversy

In his race for mayor, Mamdani tied his core platform – a rent freeze – to his personal living arrangements.

Yet his opponents, most notably one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for remaining in the affordable housing although he is from a famous family.

Previous Exceptions

Not every mayor have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, kept his residence in his own townhouse on Manhattan's Upper East Side throughout his tenure, which wrapped up in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg said he believed it ought to be a space for official events, and advocated for a major refurbishment of the older mansion.

A Grand New Home

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion for his swearing-in on 1 January, he will find himself in surroundings far removed from his previous Astoria apartment.

Adorned in pale yellow exterior, forest green window covers, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house situated by the East River.

Within, the lower floor of the classically designed mansion is decorated consistent with the home's original era.

The estate, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also includes increased security measures to secure the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

Some residents have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the partner of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that they experienced doors opening and shutting on their own, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "I don't care the skeptics say," he insisted in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

The apartment he is leaving is under rent control, meaning the city sets limits on how much property owners can hike the monthly cost each year.

City residents see such units as essential protections as the housing expenses exceeds what many can afford.

Data indicated Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from the real estate platform Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
